Yet, the problem emerged far earlier than that—in Heraclitus and Parmenides. The second question is: how can a stuff account for change and motion? This question was also crystallized in the later Presocratic tradition. Yet it was no problem for the Milesians themselves who did not distinguish between stuff and motive force. e. that matter is alive. This is why Aristotle is both right and wrong in calling the natural philosophers materialists. They can only think in terms of stuff, but stuff is not in contrast with something else.

Their visions within natural philosophy and their certainty that the physical world is an orderly world dominate all their thought. Their strength lies in generalizations and conclusions from quite general statements. To us these are hypotheses lacking verification—to the Ionians, however, they are theses—the correctness of which must be evident, once understood. The form of argumentation one senses in Anaximander and Anaximenes is from analogy—a feeble form of argumentation that demonstrates a truth rather than proving it.

As has been mentioned, he is not interested in detailed scientific speculations, but concerns himself with something other and more than the external world. The soul, human life, its conditions, and its norms—for example right and wrong—preoccupy him, but all from one point of view: the unity and the connection behind plurality and change. When he speaks of unity he most often uses the expression logos, which may be reproduced as both law and insight into law; he may also say harmony, and he may say god.
